Overall, it was a refreshingly fantastic first day at VCHC! Based on all of the smiling faces and sounds of laughter, that filled the building on Tuesday, it would be safe to say that everyone seemed to enjoy their first-day at co-op. It was truly heartwarming to see both returning and new students interacting as if they had known each other for years! Here, here to to an amazing year!
Although it went well on Tuesday, things could be better. The administration was able to learn a few things about the operations of the co-op that may be improved upon with a little adjustment. It will take the effort of everyone in the community to get these squeaky wheels turning smoothly, so here are our observations and how we would like to move forward on them:
New Study Hall Hour and Rules: a new supervised study hall hour has been added to our schedule from 10 a.m. to 11 a.m. in Room 6. Students not participating in a class may go to Room 6, check in with the attendant, and use that hour to quietly study under the supervision of a community member. Also, study hall is NOW open to students age 1st grade (6 years) and up! Students must be quiet and respectful while participating in study hall.
Choir: due to the design and furnishings in Room 16, choir will now meet in the Sanctuary (the main chapel) for the remainder of the year. We will use Room 16 as an alternate location, if needed during the various seasons. On Tuesday, Choir students please report to the Sanctuary for your class.
Community Areas, Family Study Areas, and Conversations: Parents, you are welcome to use the main downstairs foyer, the two glass enclosed entry points (on either end of the main foyer), and the downstairs nursery rooms for conversation areas, or study locations if you are working with your children on lessons. FYI...you will find a large round table in the foyer on Tuesday that you are welcome to use for a study location, if needed. We always encourage conversation and fellowship, but please be mindful of your volume, as sound carries throughout the building and may be a disruption to classes, church staff, or Women's Bible Study (meeting every other Tuesday across from the nursery).
Social Hall: the Social Hall is a classroom, when it is not being used for lunch. Please do not enter this area if not enrolled in a class, or participating in our community lunch time. Only authorized members of the community have access to this area outside of lunch. Again, the Social Hall is a working classroom and should be treated as such.
Second Floor/Upstairs: At all times, students must be enrolled in a class, or attending a study hall to be on the second floor. There is no area for parents/families in this location of the building. As always, please maintain your volume when navigating the hallways to keep from disturbing classes while they are in session. Tutors, if you wish to keep your children with you upstairs, please make sure they are quiet and occupied to keep from being a disruption while classes are in session.
Do you have a problem? We thought that title would get your attention! ;) During the co-op day, if you have a question, concern, or just want to say "I love you" please see Kelly Lawson for direction. If you cannot find Kelly, you may leave her a note at the front desk, or text her cell at (434)953-3948 if you need an answer quickly. Kelly is the Assistant Director for VCHC and is our "go-to gal" every Tuesday for all things VCHC. If Kelly does not know the answer, she will find someone who does and point you in that direction.
Classroom Signs: Tutors, please make sure you create and post a sign for each class you are conducting. Signs should be placed on your door, or next to your door (using the command strip, if available) prior to the start of your class. Next week, we will have our 2nd Annual Sign Contest and the tutor with the most votes wins a prize! Prize will be awarded on 9/18.
Suggestions, Comments, Concerns? Please email VCHCFred@aol.com if you have a suggestion to make our community better, a comment to tell us how much you love us, or a concern that you would like addressed, please send us an email and we will be happy to respond to you as soon as possible. We always want to hear from you!
We are so thankful for each of our families and are excited to see what the Lord has in store for VCHC in 2018 and 2019! Your willingness to serve and help this beautiful community is overwhelming and humbling, to say the least. We pray daily that the Lord blesses you as you continue this journey of homeschooling the best kids in Fredericksburg!
